China's ATP120A Engine Passes Extreme Cold-Weather Ignition Test at -30°C
China has made progress in domestic turboprop engine development with the ATP120A. Designed by Harbin Dongan Civil Aviation Engine Co., the engine recently passed a critical cold-weather ignition test. Its performance now ranks among the best in the country for this type of propulsion system.
The ATP120A was independently developed by Harbin Dongan, a subsidiary of Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC). Engineers designed it to operate reliably in harsh conditions, including high-altitude regions, freezing temperatures, and coastal areas with heavy salt exposure. In February 2026, the engine successfully completed an ignition test at -30°C in Harbin, proving its cold-weather capabilities.
The project has now moved into full testing and verification. While no aircraft or drones currently use the ATP120A, the engine is intended for general aviation and unmanned systems. Future applications may also include hybrid and hydrogen-powered propulsion.
Key features of the ATP120A include low operating costs, extended service life, and fuel efficiency. Its adaptability to extreme environments and strong high-altitude performance set it apart from earlier domestic designs.
The ATP120A remains in development, with no confirmed installations on aircraft or drones as of early 2026. Once certified, it could provide a domestically produced option for general aviation and emerging propulsion technologies. The engine's successful cold-weather test marks a step forward for China's aviation engine sector.
