Trial Against 'Last Generation' Activists Begins - Climate activist faces trial after gluing himself to Hamburg airport tarmac

A 21-year-old climate activist from the group Last Generation will face trial in Hamburg after disrupting operations at the city's airport. The case follows an incident where the man allegedly glued himself to the tarmac, causing significant delays and financial damage.

The activist's protest took place earlier this year, leading to flight cancellations, diversions, and costly runway repairs. Authorities estimate the disruption caused around €144,000 in damages. His stated aim was to draw maximum media coverage for Last Generation, a group known for high-profile climate demonstrations.

The original trial date had been postponed, but proceedings will now move forward. This case adds to a growing number of legal actions against the group. Court records show 690 prosecutions related to Last Generation activists, with 23 indictments filed so far. Of these, around 310 cases were dismissed, while others resulted in convictions—ranging from fines to short prison terms.

The trial will determine whether the activist is held liable for the financial and operational fallout of his protest. A conviction could add to the group's record of legal consequences, which already includes penalties for similar disruptions. The outcome may also influence future demonstrations by climate activists in Germany.
