Comelec warns against last-minute voter registration for 2028 elections
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has reminded the public to avoid last-minute voter registration after receiving complaints from those who missed the deadline. With the recent registration period for the November 2026 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) ending on May 18, officials are now preparing for the next phase ahead of the May 2028 national and local polls. The voter registration window for the BSKE saw a total of 5,470,889 applications filed by the final day. However, some individuals were unable to complete their registration due to long queues and delays. Comelec Chairman George Garcia has repeatedly urged citizens to register early rather than waiting until the last moment.
Looking ahead, the Comelec plans to reopen voter registration in February 2027 for the May 2028 elections. The registration period will run until September 2027. Garcia emphasised the need to break the public’s habit of cramming, as late applications risk being left unprocessed. Those who missed the previous deadline will have another opportunity in early 2027. The Comelec has stressed that while it aims to accommodate all applicants, last-minute rushes may prevent some from successfully registering in time.
The next voter registration period will begin in February 2027 and last until September of the same year. Officials have warned that early registration will help avoid overcrowding and ensure all eligible voters can participate in the 2028 elections. The Comelec continues to encourage the public to plan ahead and complete their applications well before the deadline.
