A targeted attack in late September 2024 left Dallas police officer Darron Burks dead at the age of 46. The shooter, 30-year-old Corey Cobb-Bey, approached Burks in a parking lot before firing the fatal shots. The incident has reignited debates over gun violence and law enforcement safety in the US.

Before joining the Dallas police force, Burks had spent around 17 years teaching math. His death has prompted widespread calls for stricter accountability in firearm sales and law enforcement protections.

Cobb-Bey had purchased the handgun used in the killing from 24 Hour Pawn in early July 2024. A lawsuit filed by Burks' mother, Cherie Jeffery, claims the pawnshop violated state and federal laws in the sale. The lawsuit also names Cobb-Bey's parents, alleging they knew he was stockpiling weapons at their home. In the months leading up to the shooting, Cobb-Bey had shown increasingly erratic and violent behaviour. He had been fired from his job and had killed a dog, burying it in his parents' backyard. On the day of the attack, he walked up to Burks while the officer waited in a parking lot, drew his gun, and shot him. Jeffery's lawsuit states she has suffered severe mental anguish, while Burks endured physical pain before his death. The case has drawn attention to illegal firearm trafficking, particularly after recent high-profile officer killings that have put unlicensed gun dealers under scrutiny.

The lawsuit against Cobb-Bey's parents and the pawnshop remains ongoing. If successful, it could set a precedent for holding private sellers and family members accountable in cases involving illegal firearm transfers. The shooting has also intensified discussions about preventing gun violence and strengthening law enforcement protections.
