Daycare Worker Accused of Abusing 15 Toddlers in Shocking Swiss Case

A 33-year-old daycare worker has been accused of sexually abusing at least 15 children across two facilities in the Bern and Zurich cantons. The alleged crimes came to light in February 2024 after his arrest on suspicion of possessing child pornography.

Most of the victims were girls aged between one and four. Authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the abuse, which reportedly took place over an extended period.

The suspect worked at two daycare centres where the abuse is said to have occurred. Police uncovered the allegations while examining his electronic devices during the child pornography investigation. The case has raised concerns about safeguarding procedures in early years settings.

Psychotherapist Myriam Thoma, a lecturer in clinical psychology at the University of Basel, specialises in early trauma. She explains that children of this age may not yet have the language to describe what happened to them. Earliest conscious memories usually form between three and four, meaning some victims might never recall the abuse explicitly. Yet, traumatic events can still leave deep, lasting effects. Survivors of childhood sexual abuse often face long-term challenges. These can include post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and difficulties forming secure relationships. Many struggle with emotional regulation and develop a distorted self-image as they grow older. Therapy for those affected typically focuses on rebuilding a sense of safety. Caregivers are advised to address the trauma gradually, helping children process their experiences without overwhelming them. For adult survivors, treatment often centres on emotional stability and learning to trust others again.

The investigation into the daycare worker's actions remains ongoing. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether further charges will be brought. Meanwhile, experts stress the importance of early intervention and long-term support for victims of childhood abuse.

Survivors may carry the psychological impact into adulthood, requiring specialised care. Therapists like Thoma highlight the need for tailored approaches to help them rebuild their lives.
