DHL's AI tool cuts customs paperwork with a single photo

DHL Express has launched an AI-powered tool to simplify customs declarations for international shipments. Customers can now photograph their items before sending them, and the system will generate an automated, customs-compliant description. The feature aims to replace the time-consuming manual process of declaring package contents. The new solution uses computer vision to analyse photos of shipment items. It then creates structured descriptions that meet international customs requirements. DHL Express claims this is the first large-scale deployment of such technology in global express shipping.

The tool is currently available in eight markets: Germany, Canada, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. No registration is needed—users only require a smartphone or camera-equipped device to access the feature.

DHL Express plans to expand the service globally in phases throughout 2026. Enna Zarate, Senior Vice President of Digital Customer Solutions, highlighted the importance of accurate shipment descriptions for a smooth customer experience. Dirk Olufs, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Information Officer, added that precise data from the start reduces follow-up queries and speeds up customs clearance. The AI-powered system is designed to streamline international shipping by cutting down on manual paperwork. Faster and more accurate customs declarations could lead to fewer delays for businesses and individuals. The phased rollout will continue across more countries over the next two years.
