Arms Companies Plan to Launch Satellite Network in Space by 2029 - Europe to launch 100 military satellites by 2029 for all-weather surveillance

A new European defence project will see between 75 and 100 satellites launched by 2029. The initiative, led by German AI firm Helsing and Norwegian defence company Kongsberg, aims to strengthen Europe’s military surveillance capabilities. The satellites will provide weather-independent reconnaissance, a priority highlighted by Ukraine’s ongoing defensive war against Russia. The joint venture will focus on reconnaissance, surveillance, and tracking military targets. Hensoldt, another German defence contractor, will supply the satellites with radar, radio, and optical sensors. These systems are designed to operate regardless of weather conditions, ensuring reliable data collection.

Isar Aerospace, a Munich-based launch provider, will deploy the satellites from its spaceport in Andøya, Norway. The project’s initial funding—tens of millions of euros—will come from the companies’ own resources. A joint production facility in Germany will also be established to support the mission.

The partners hope to secure further contracts, including potential orders from the German government. The goal is to give European militaries independent capabilities, reducing reliance on U.S. systems for critical intelligence. The first satellites are expected to be operational by 2029. Their deployment will provide European forces with persistent, all-weather surveillance. The project marks a step toward greater strategic autonomy in defence technology.
