Former Preußen Münster Captain Charged with Fraud

Prosecutors in Münster have filed fraud charges against professional footballer Marc Lorenz. Investigators allege commercial-scale fraud.

The accusation: During his time as a player and captain of Preußen Münster, Marc Lorenz is said to have collected over €54,000 in donations—only to initially keep the money for himself.

Authorities suspect commercial fraud, claiming Lorenz organized ten separate charity fundraisers, soliciting donations that he failed to pass on as intended.

Fundraisers for "Clinic Clowns"

The alleged misconduct primarily involves campaigns for the "Clinic Clowns" at Münster University Hospital, including one effort to support a family whose infant had recently died. Lorenz denies the charges.

His defense attorney previously stated that Lorenz had not committed any crime, arguing that personal difficulties had merely delayed the transfer of funds. According to the defense, the eventual payments negate any criminal liability for fraud.

Lorenz Later Transferred the Money

Prosecutors disagree. While Lorenz did eventually transfer the funds to the grieving family, the university hospital, and two nonprofit organizations, they argue that this belated restitution does not affect the legal assessment of the case. Lorenz remains presumed innocent. His lawyer is currently unavailable for comment, as they are traveling.

Club Terminated Former Captain Without Notice

Preußen Münster had already dismissed Lorenz without notice over the allegations. Player and club later reached an out-of-court settlement. However, with formal charges now filed, the former professional footballer from Münster may yet face further legal consequences. The district court must now decide whether to proceed with the indictment.
