The Secret of Finnish Happiness - Finland's Secret to Happiness Lies in Nature and Ancient Freedoms
Finland is often named the happiest country in the world. A new documentary explores why this might be. Terra X presenter Hannah Emde travels across the Nordic nation to uncover the secrets behind its contented people.
The episode, Fascinating Earth with Hannah Emde – Finland: The Search for Happiness, will air on ZDF on March 8 at 7:30 PM. It will also be available to stream in the ZDF Media Library from March 4.
Finland's deep connection to nature plays a central role in its culture. The country endures harsh extremes, from winter temperatures as low as -40°C to warm summers. Polar nights and the midnight sun shape daily life for months at a time.
A key part of Finnish identity is jokamiehenoikeus, or 'Everyman's Right'. This tradition dates back to medieval times, when people could freely cross and forage on uncultivated land. Over centuries, it became formalised—first through 19th-century nationalism and later in post-war land reforms. Today, the Nature Conservation Act (1996) and Land Act protect this freedom, allowing hiking, berry-picking, and camping on most private land. However, the law forbids damage, disturbance, or using vehicles off-road.
Many Finns believe their respect for nature brings rewards: clean air, open spaces, and the freedom to roam. This bond with the environment is one reason the country consistently ranks as the happiest in the world.
Hannah Emde, a veterinarian and passionate conservationist, hosts the Terra X episode. She examines how Finland's landscapes and traditions contribute to its people's well-being. The programme follows her journey across forests, lakes, and cities to understand what makes the nation so content.
The documentary offers a closer look at Finland's unique way of life. It highlights how nature, history, and modern laws combine to create a society where happiness thrives. Viewers can watch Fascinating Earth with Hannah Emde – Finland: The Search for Happiness on ZDF from March 8 or stream it from March 4.
