Fribourg may become the next Swiss canton to ban disposable vapes
The canton of Fribourg is considering a ban on disposable vapes, following similar moves by Geneva and Valais to restrict single-use electronic cigarettes. Officials cite health risks and environmental concerns as key reasons for the proposal.
The State Council launched a public consultation on Monday to gather opinions on the potential ban. If approved, the measure would also prohibit free giveaways of these products. Additionally, stricter rules on advertising and sales of tobacco and e-cigarettes are being discussed.
Disposable vapes, often flavoured to appeal to younger users, have come under scrutiny. Experts highlight their health risks and the environmental damage caused by discarded devices. The Fribourg government aims to tighten age verification through undercover test purchases at retailers.
Meanwhile, Basel-City and Bern are exploring their own bans on the sale, distribution, and production of disposable vapes. As of March 2026, no Swiss canton has yet enforced a full ban, though several are moving in that direction.
The proposed restrictions in Fribourg would include bans on advertising in public spaces and at events. If implemented, these measures would mark a significant step in regulating tobacco and nicotine products across Switzerland. The outcome of the public consultation will determine the next steps.
