German mathematician Gerd Faltings has won the 2023 Abel Prize, one of the highest honours in mathematics. The 71-year-old researcher, based at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, will receive the award in Oslo on May 26. His groundbreaking work in arithmetic geometry has shaped the field for decades.

Faltings first gained worldwide recognition in 1983 when he solved the Mordell Conjecture. This long-standing problem in algebraic geometry had remained unsolved since Louis Joel Mordell proposed it in 1922. His proof introduced entirely new methods that transformed the study of arithmetic geometry.

After this breakthrough, Faltings continued to expand his theories. He developed what is now known as Faltings' Product Theorem, which later helped resolve the Mordell-Lang Conjecture. His techniques also played a key role in advancing the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, influencing many other areas of mathematics along the way. The Abel Prize committee honoured Faltings 'for introducing powerful tools in arithmetic geometry.' His contributions have guided generations of researchers, leaving a lasting impact on the discipline. With this award, he becomes one of the few mathematicians to hold both the Abel Prize and the Fields Medal, the latter of which he received in 1986. Faltings has spent much of his career at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics, where he served as director until 2023. He now holds the position of director emeritus. The prize includes 7.5 million Norwegian kroner (around €680,000), which Crown Prince Haakon of Norway will present at the ceremony.

The 2023 Abel Prize ceremony will take place in Oslo on May 26, where Faltings will be formally recognised for his lifelong achievements. His methods in arithmetic geometry remain foundational for current and future research. The award also highlights his rare distinction of receiving both the Abel Prize and the Fields Medal.
