According to cynologist and volunteer Mamuchar Dzhabasov, the dog remains in a state of stress, deeply frightened, and is only gradually recovering from her injuries.
"We provided first aid and stabilized her condition," Dzhabasov said. "The poor thing is terrified and doesn't know who to turn to for protection. Our priority now is to rebuild her trust in people. The road to recovery will be long, but with God's help, we will overcome this."
Gerda, a Staffordshire Terrier, has had a string of misfortune with previous owners, witnesses say. She endured multiple changes of hands before ending up in this tragic situation.
Law enforcement has launched a criminal case over the animal cruelty incident. The woman involved in the attack has been detained and faces administrative charges. The dog has been confiscated and received necessary veterinary care.
Police have reminded the public that animal cruelty is a criminal offense and that such cases will be met with strict legal consequences.
Earlier reports indicated that the woman had beaten the dog with a shovel in Atyrau.
