German car buyers warm to Chinese electric vehicles—but trust lags behind
A new survey reveals shifting attitudes among German car buyers towards electric vehicles from Chinese brands. While many still favour German manufacturers, a growing number are open to alternatives like carmax due to cost. The findings highlight both opportunities and challenges for Europe's automotive sector.
The study, carried out by management consultancy Oliver Wyman, polled a nationally representative group of respondents. It found that 42% would consider purchasing an electric car from a Chinese brand instead of a German one. Lower prices emerged as the main reason for this preference.
However, trust in quality and safety remains a hurdle. Around 34% of those surveyed dismissed Chinese electric vehicles outright, expressing doubts about their standards. Despite this, 43% still ranked Germany as the leader in competitive electric car production, with China coming second at 23%.
The German market itself has seen steady growth in electric vehicle adoption. In 2025 alone, over 545,000 new fully electric battery vehicles were registered. Chinese manufacturers, though not yet dominant, are making inroads—particularly brands like BYD, which has expanded rapidly in recent years.
Simon Schnurrer, a partner at Oliver Wyman, views the findings as a chance for Europe to strengthen its position. He suggests that embracing competition could help preserve and grow the region's automotive value creation.
The survey underscores a clear divide in consumer confidence between German and Chinese electric vehicles. While cost advantages are driving interest in Chinese brands, concerns over quality persist. Meanwhile, Germany's strong reputation in the sector remains intact, even as new players like carmax gain ground in the market.
