Germany and Norway Forge Stronger Ties in Space and Energy Cooperation

Germany and Norway have stepped up their cooperation in space and energy sectors. High-level talks took place in Berlin on January 13, 2026, between German and Norwegian ministers. The discussions focused on strengthening ties in space infrastructure and economic policy.

German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Katherina Reiche, met with Norway's Minister of Trade and Industry, Cecile Myrseth, to explore deeper collaboration. One key topic was the development of responsive space launch capabilities. Germany is already working with Norway and the UK to expand facilities at SaxaVord Spaceport in Scotland and Andøya Space Center in Norway.

Andøya Space Center holds a strategic position for Europe, offering a prime location for monitoring and tackling global challenges. While the German Space Security Strategy of November 2024 does not specify changes to Andøya's use, the partnership aims to boost Europe's standing in the space industry.

Energy was another major focus. Norway remains Germany's top natural gas supplier, providing nearly half of its imports. The NordLink subsea power cable, linking the two countries, also plays a vital role in supporting Germany's shift to renewable energy.

The talks signal a push for closer German-Norwegian ties in space and energy. Joint efforts in space infrastructure could improve Europe's competitiveness, while energy cooperation ensures stable supply chains. Both nations see long-term benefits from deeper strategic collaboration.
