Electric Catamaran Resumes Service Between Norddeich and Norderney - Germany's electric catamaran Frisia E-I returns for a greener second season
Germany's first all-electric passenger catamaran, the Frisia E-I, has returned for its second season. Launched in April 2025, the vessel operates between Norddeich and Norderney, offering a cleaner and faster alternative to diesel ferries. Passengers have responded positively to the eco-friendly service.
The Frisia E-I made its debut last year as the first purely battery-powered seagoing ship under the German flag. During its trial season, it completed daily crossings with only minor technical issues, including a blown fuse and a transmission fault. The catamaran's reliability and performance impressed both operators and travellers.
From spring, the ferry runs three to four times a day, increasing to five round trips daily from 4 July. While tickets cost €5 more than conventional ferries, passengers have welcomed the reduced crossing time and zero-emission travel. Norden-Frisia, the operator, has also invested in charging infrastructure at Norddeich harbour, powered by photovoltaic systems, including solar panels on a large car park. No official figures on average passenger numbers per trip have been released for the 2025 season.
The Frisia E-I demonstrates how innovative technology can cut emissions in maritime transport. With its successful first year and growing passenger interest, the electric catamaran sets a practical example for future carbon-neutral island connections. The project highlights the potential for cleaner shipping solutions in the industry.
