"Playboy" Survey: Stress and Bad News Lead to Decline in Sex - Germany's sexual activity plummets as stress and digital life take over

Sexual activity in Germany has fallen sharply over the past year, according to new research. A 2023 study by the Bundeszentrale für gesundheitliche Aufklärung (BZgA) shows fewer people engaging in stress management activities regularly, with stress, digital distractions, and broader societal shifts playing a role. The decline affects both singles and couples, though satisfaction levels tell a more complex story.

The latest data reveals a clear downward trend. In 2019, 20% of adults reported no sexual activity in the previous year—this figure has now risen to 28%. Factors like an ageing population, lingering pandemic effects, and increasing celibacy among younger people contribute to the shift.

For those in relationships, the drop is noticeable. Last year, 74% had sex multiple times a month; today, only 55% do. Nearly half of respondents (46%) blame stress management and bad news for their reduced activity. Another 11% point to digital media as a distraction.

Singles face even sharper declines. The share having sex several times a month fell from 26% to 17% over the past year. Sexual satisfaction among singles has also plunged, from around 33% to just 24%.

Desire itself appears to be waning. Around 42% of women and 30% of men report feeling less interest lately, though researchers have yet to pinpoint a single cause.

Despite the overall decline, 68% of couples still describe themselves as sexually satisfied—a rise from 59% the previous year.

The study highlights a significant reduction in sexual frequency across Germany, driven by stress management, digital habits, and changing lifestyles. While activity has decreased, reported satisfaction among couples has unexpectedly improved. Researchers continue to examine the reasons behind these contrasting trends.
