Major Long-Term Health Study Enters Next Phase - Germany's SHIP study launches new health exams for long-term participants

The Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP) has begun its latest wave of examinations, continuing one of the world's largest long-term health studies. Running from March to October, this phase will assess up to 1,000 participants aged between 47 and 102 years old. The research also includes a 'One Health' approach, covering nearly 4,400 people and over 1,000 pets since 2021.

SHIP has tracked health trends in the region for decades by repeatedly examining the same group of participants. In this new round, 925 individuals have taken part in all five previous waves, while another 150 missed at most one. Many will now undergo their sixth set of assessments since the study began in 1997.

The examinations are thorough, including measurements, ultrasound scans, and dental checks. Optional tests such as MRI scans, cardiovascular evaluations, and lung function assessments are also available. Data from SHIP has supported countless national and international research projects over the years. By the end of 2025, the first phase of the new participant group—launched in May 2021—will conclude. This group follows the 'One Health' principle, linking human and animal health, though specific details on the types of pets involved remain unclear.

The latest wave of SHIP will add to a vast dataset that has shaped health research for years. Participants, some now in their sixth round of testing, provide long-term insights into ageing and disease. The findings will continue to inform medical studies both in Germany and beyond.
