The University of Hawaii at Hilo is set to host the 21st Astronaut Ellison Onizuka Science Day on Saturday, January 24. Organised by the Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems (PISCES), the free event invites people of all ages to celebrate Hawaii's first astronaut and explore STEM opportunities. This year's gathering also marks the 40th anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger tragedy, honouring Onizuka's legacy in education and space exploration.

The event returns to UH Hilo after a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic. Running from 7:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., it will feature hands-on workshops for students in grades 3–12, STEM exhibits, and a VEX IQ Robotics tournament. Families are encouraged to register early, as workshop spots will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

NASA astronaut Donald R. Pettit will join the celebrations, offering an 'ask-me-anything' session for attendees. The day will also include talks from special guest speakers, food trucks, and interactive demonstrations. Sponsors like American Savings Bank and KTA Super Stores are supporting the event, covering travel costs for Pettit and providing lunches for students.

The programme aims to inspire young learners in science, technology, engineering, and maths. By connecting them with real-world astronauts and cutting-edge activities, organisers hope to foster the next generation of innovators in Hawaii and beyond.

The 21st Astronaut Ellison Onizuka Science Day brings together education, remembrance, and hands-on learning. With workshops, robotics competitions, and direct engagement with NASA professionals, the event offers students a chance to explore STEM fields in a dynamic setting. Registration remains open, and all activities are free for participants of every age.
