Among them, Candida species, including drug-resistant strains of Candida parapsilosis, have been detected in city air samples, raising concerns about direct transmission from the environment to humans.
Bacterial endotoxins, though making up less than 0.0001% of PM2.5 mass, still trigger inflammatory responses in about one in five cases. These toxins activate immune pathways in the respiratory system, potentially worsening chronic lung conditions. Meanwhile, urban air itself can act as a reservoir for drug-resistant fungal pathogens, spreading infections and deepening the environmental health crisis. Scientists stress the need for a coordinated approach to tackle airborne microbial threats. Mapping fungal hotspots in cities and understanding how environmental factors boost drug resistance could guide better interventions. Advanced tools like genomic sequencing may also help track dangerous pathogens before they spark outbreaks or aggravate long-term illnesses.
Current pollution controls have overlooked the risks of airborne microbes and toxins. Identifying fungal reservoirs and monitoring drug-resistant strains could shape more effective public health strategies.
