Houston Firm Launches Lunar Mission to Mine Helium-3 for Clean Fusion Power
A Houston-based company is preparing to extract a rare lunar resource that could revolutionise energy production. Black Moon Energy Corporation (BMEC) has launched a robotic mission to the Moon to study Helium-3, a fuel with the potential to power fusion reactors far more efficiently than current methods. The project, backed by expertise from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Caltech, marks a significant step toward commercial fusion energy by the mid-2030s.
Black Moon Energy Corporation, founded in 2022, specialises in lunar Helium-3 extraction for clean fusion power. CEO David Warden brings experience from Rice University, Schlumberger, and BP, guiding the company's push into space-based energy solutions. The mission's goal is to gather critical data over a year-long expedition, reducing risks for future Helium-3 production.
Helium-3 is abundant on the Moon, with enough reserves to meet humanity's energy needs for millennia. Unlike traditional nuclear fission, Helium-3 fusion releases no radioactive waste and produces four times more energy. Compared to fossil fuels, it yields four million times the energy output, making it a game-changer for sustainable power.
JPL will oversee data collection and mission operations, drawing on its long history in robotic space exploration. Caltech's involvement ensures advanced scientific instrumentation for the study. The insights gathered will help BMEC build a cost-effective supply chain, paving the way for fusion energy integration into global electrical grids.
The mission aligns with a broader surge in fusion investment, which reached $2.64 billion by July 2025. If successful, the data could influence not just energy but other industries relying on high-efficiency power sources.
The findings from this expedition will shape BMEC's plans for a steady Helium-3 supply chain. By the mid-2030s, the company aims to support commercial fusion power on Earth's electrical grids. The mission's success could also accelerate the adoption of cleaner, more powerful energy alternatives worldwide.
