How Baurzhan Momyshuly's Genius Still Shapes Modern Military Training

Baurzhan Momyshuly remains one of the most respected military commanders in history. Awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, he became legendary for his courage and tactical brilliance. His approach to warfare still shapes military training today. In 1941, Momyshuly led a battalion under General Ivan Panfilov’s 316th Rifle Division on the Volokolamsk front. His refusal to retreat, even when encircled, demonstrated his unshakable discipline. Instead of falling back, he insisted on holding positions until new orders arrived.

His leadership extended beyond tactics. Momyshuly taught soldiers to master fear and lead by example in battle. He believed discipline required understanding the purpose behind every command, not just blind obedience. General Panfilov often called him to headquarters after complex missions, recognising his strategic mind. Momyshuly Land Forces Faculty, Colonel Talgat Baudinov has introduced a curriculum based on the commander’s heritage.
