Hungary's 4iG bets $100M on Axiom Space to dominate orbital data
Hungarian communications firm 4iG is expanding into the space sector with a $100 million investment in U.S.-based Axiom Space. The deal, announced recently, also includes plans for a new satellite manufacturing plant in Hungary by late 2026. This move strengthens economic ties between the two countries while positioning 4iG as a key player in orbital infrastructure and data services. The investment will be made in two stages. 4iG will transfer $30 million to Axiom by the end of 2025, followed by a further $70 million by March 31, 2026. The funding aims to secure 4iG's involvement in Axiom's orbital data centre projects and space-based data processing systems.
Beyond its U.S. partnership, 4iG is advancing its own satellite ambitions. The company has signed a 15-year agreement with Eutelsat for a geostationary orbital slot, laying the groundwork for its HUSAT programme. This initiative includes one geostationary satellite, HUGEO, and eight low-Earth-orbit observation satellites, HULEO, with launches scheduled between late 2028 and 2033. To support these plans, 4iG will open a 4,000-square-metre facility in late 2026. The plant will handle manufacturing, assembly, integration, and testing of spacecraft weighing up to 400 kilograms. The company is also pursuing a vertically integrated model, covering satellite production, ground operations, and remote sensing services. 4iG's space strategy extends to defence collaborations. Separate agreements with Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin focus on developing defence technologies. Additionally, the firm holds a 20% minority stake in Spacecom and is involved in its debt restructuring process.
The $100 million investment in Axiom Space marks a significant step in U.S.-Hungarian technological cooperation. With new infrastructure, satellite programmes, and defence partnerships, 4iG is building a broad presence in the space industry. The company's long-term goal is to establish itself as a major provider of orbital data and satellite services.
