The fifth annual foundation day of the Jorhat District Committee of the All Assam Journalists Union (AAJU) took place on Monday at the Jorhat Science Centre and Planetarium. The event honoured the legacy of late journalist Deba Kumar Bora while addressing the future of media ethics in a changing industry.
The ceremony began with Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, hoisting the flag as the chief guest. He later paid tribute to Deba Kumar Bora, highlighting the late journalist's dedication to public service and journalism.
Barnali Saikia Bora, a family member of Deba Kumar Bora, lit the ceremonial lamp to mark the start of the award ceremony. The event was chaired by AAJU Jorhat District Committee president Jogesh Oza, with Nabajyoti Baruah anchoring the programme and Debajit Bora delivering the welcome address.
Lalit Bora, President of the Journalists' Welfare Fund, spoke about Deba Kumar Bora's life and lasting impact. Bora, who founded Dainik Asom in 1965—Assam's first daily newspaper—and later Ajir Asom, passed away on October 27, 2016, in Guwahati. His work set high journalistic standards, promoted Assamese-language reporting, and inspired regional media growth. Today, Ajir Asom remains a leading publication with an expanded digital presence, while his influence extends to outlets like The Assam Tribune and emerging online platforms.
The discussions concluded with a call to maintain ethical journalism while adapting responsibly to technological advancements in media.
The event celebrated Deba Kumar Bora's contributions to Assamese journalism and reinforced the need for ethical practices in modern media. His legacy continues to shape the region's media landscape, with Ajir Asom and other outlets upholding the standards he established.
