Photographer and conservationist Justin Compion has spent over two decades documenting the East African Rift. His latest book, The Rift: Scar of Africa, combines striking images with deep insights into the region’s geology, wildlife, and human cultures. The work reflects his long journey from a seven-month road trip in 2002 to a career dedicated to preserving the Rift’s fragile ecosystems. The East African Rift System stretches 4,000 miles, running from Botswana and Mozambique in the south to Djibouti, the Red Sea, and even into Jordan. This vast geological feature has shaped human evolution, biodiversity, and modern challenges like urbanisation and climate change.
Compion’s fascination with the Rift began in 2002 when he and a friend drove north in a Land Rover. Their route took them through Kenya’s Lake Nakuru, famous for its flocks of pink flamingos. That trip marked the start of his lifelong connection to the region. Over the years, he has worked closely with local communities, including the Suri tribe in Ethiopia. His efforts have supported education and conservation projects, helping balance human needs with environmental protection. Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique stands as a success story—under the late Marc Stalmans, its wildlife, including lions, has rebounded after years of decline. Yet the Rift faces growing threats. Cities like Nairobi and Addis Ababa now sit on its edges, accelerating desertification and straining food supplies. Despite these pressures, Compion remains hopeful. He points to regenerative farming and strong local leadership as signs of progress. *The Rift: Scar of Africa* is his seventh book. It blends photography with exploration of the valley’s origins, its role in hominid evolution, and the impact of human activity. Even after decades of work, he believes the Rift still holds untold stories.
Compion’s book arrives as the Rift’s future hangs in the balance. Urban growth and environmental stress continue to reshape the region. Yet his work highlights both the challenges and the resilience of the landscapes, wildlife, and people who call it home.
