Khabarovsk's tram tracks get first major overhaul in 30 years

Major repairs on the tram tracks along Sheronova Street in Khabarovsk are set to begin in June. The work, part of the national Infrastructure for Life project, will fully reconstruct a key section between Volochayevskaya and Lenin streets. This marks the first large-scale overhaul of the tracks since the mid-1990s. The project will remove the old subgrade entirely and replace it with a new base. Wooden sleepers, now outdated, will be swapped for reinforced concrete versions to handle heavier loads and last longer. Engineers will also reduce the number of rail joints, improving track stability and allowing for better inspections.

A reversible tram system has been introduced on Sheronova Street to keep services running during the repairs. Once the first section is renewed, crews will reinstall switch points and move on to fixing the adjacent track. The modernised design aims to cut down on wear for both tram wheels and tracks, leading to faster, quieter, and smoother journeys. Funding for the work comes from the *Infrastructure for Life* initiative, launched by President Vladimir Putin. The full reconstruction is scheduled for completion by late August.

The upgrades will extend the track’s lifespan and improve reliability for daily commuters. With fewer rail joints and reinforced materials, the system is expected to handle increased traffic more efficiently. The project also aligns with broader efforts to modernise public transport infrastructure across the region.
