Krasnodar breaks 50-year rainfall record with historic May downpours
Krasnodar has experienced its wettest May in at least 50 years, with record-breaking rainfall causing widespread disruption. Heavy downpours overnight added to the month’s already high totals, forcing emergency crews into action across the city. Since the start of May, the city has recorded 161 mm of rain—248% of the usual monthly amount. A single night brought 31 mm alone, nearly half the average expected for the entire month. The extreme weather has left streets flooded and trees downed in multiple areas.
Residents reported 38 calls to the city’s Unified Dispatch Service in the past 24 hours. Municipal rescue teams are now clearing debris from roads and courtyards to keep routes safe. Pump trucks have also been deployed to drain water from affected neighbourhoods. Repairs and clean-up efforts are focused on key locations, including Aksayskaya Street, Musorgsky Street, and 1st Krup-skaya Lane. Other areas under work include Yagodin Street, Koltsovoy Proezd, and the Novoznamensky microdistrict, as well as Ulanskaya Street, Lenin Farmstead, and Plastunskaya Street.
The heavy rain has set a new record for May in Krasnodar, with precipitation levels not seen in decades. Emergency services continue to address flooding and fallen trees, ensuring residents can move safely through the city. Work remains ongoing in several districts to restore normal conditions.
