Lucerne advances gender equality but delays key LGBTI initiatives until 2026
Lucerne has made steady progress in improving gender equality and LGBTI rights over the past year. While not all planned initiatives launched in 2025 due to delays, city officials report positive developments in schools, public awareness, and workplace policies. The city is also working towards earning an official LGBTI label to better support its diverse workforce.
In 2024, Lucerne focused its annual theme on 'masculinities', aiming to raise awareness about gender equality. Public workshops on civil courage were held to help residents respond to boundary violations in public spaces. Meanwhile, diversity education was expanded in local schools through targeted programmes.
The city had originally planned 21 measures for 2025, but some faced setbacks due to political delays and coordination issues with external partners. The remaining initiatives will now be implemented in 2026, with the next annual theme set as 'The History of Equality', highlighting key milestones in Lucerne's gender equality efforts. City President Beat Züsli confirmed progress in advancing equality policies, including the push for an LGBTI label. This certification, already held by cities like Zürich, Geneva, Basel, Bern, and Lausanne, would ensure fair workplace conditions for LGBTI employees. Lucerne remains behind these cities in formal recognition but continues to develop its anti-discrimination measures.
Lucerne's efforts to strengthen equality and LGBTI rights will extend into 2026, with delayed measures now rescheduled. The city's push for an LGBTI label and ongoing education programmes reflect its commitment to creating a more inclusive environment. Officials will continue monitoring progress as new initiatives roll out in the coming year.
