Magic's Lorwyn Eclipsed expansion merges light and shadow in January 2023
A new Magic: The Gathering expansion is on the way, revisiting two iconic worlds. Lorwyn Eclipsed blends the bright, whimsical plane of Lorwyn with its twisted counterpart, Shadowmoor. The set introduces fresh news while bringing back fan-favourite features from the original 2007 release.
The expansion will launch digitally first, arriving on Magic: The Gathering Arena on January 20, 2023. Physical copies, including booster packs and themed Commander decks, will follow three days later on January 23.
Three new keywords define the set's gameplay. The 'Vivid' ability rewards players for using multiple colours, reflecting Lorwyn's vibrant, multicoloured nature. In contrast, 'Blight' lets players weaken their opponent's creatures with -1/-1 counters, embodying Shadowmoor's darker, harsher news. The 'Changeling' trait also returns, allowing shapeshifters to adopt other creature types and gain their associated bonuses.
Crossing between Lorwyn and Shadowmoor transforms those who venture across the twilight border. A short film titled One Light, One Dark explores this divide, showing how characters' lives differ depending on which side they inhabit.
The original Lorwyn set debuted on September 29, 2007, with a prerelease event held a week earlier. Published by Wizards of the Coast, it was available worldwide without a specific regional focus.
Lorwyn Eclipsed merges old and new elements, from revived mechanics to fresh storytelling. The expansion's digital and physical releases will give players multiple ways to explore its dual worlds. Fans can expect a mix of strategic depth and thematic contrast when the set arrives in January 2023.
