Malaysia's New AI Initiative Puts Youth at the Heart of Digital Growth
Malaysia is preparing to launch the Government Innovation Initiative (GII), a new platform designed to tackle public sector challenges using emerging technologies. The scheme will invite researchers, innovators, and young people to develop practical solutions—particularly in artificial intelligence (AI). With AI already playing a major role in the economy, its future impact will depend on how it is shaped by today’s youth.
AI is set to become a key driver of Malaysia’s economic growth. By 2030, it could add between RM13 billion and RM20 billion to the country’s GDP each year. This would translate to an annual growth boost of 0.8 to 1.2 percentage points. The digital economy, fuelled by AI, already accounted for over 23% of GDP in 2022—more than RM450 billion.
The upcoming 5th International Conference on Youth 2026 (ICYouth) will focus on AI’s ethical and inclusive use. Organisers aim to explore how the technology can enhance social wellbeing while ensuring fairness and accessibility. Meanwhile, the GII platform will provide real-world problems from the public sector, giving young innovators a chance to create meaningful AI-driven solutions. Experts stress that AI’s long-term effects will hinge on the values embedded in its development. The systems designed, models trained, and data used today will shape its future. This makes the involvement of younger generations critical in steering AI toward responsible and beneficial outcomes.
The launch of GII and events like ICYouth highlight Malaysia’s push to harness AI for economic and social progress. With young innovators at the forefront, the technology’s potential to drive growth and improve lives will depend on ethical design and practical application. The country’s digital economy is already strong, but AI’s full impact remains tied to how it is developed in the years ahead.
