March 11 unites security, romance and plumbing in global observances

March 11 marks several distinct observances around the world. In Russia, it is recognised as Private Security Officers' Day, honouring those in the industry. The date also coincides with Romeo and Juliet Day and World Plumbing Day, each with its own historical significance.

Russia's Private Security Officers' Day traces back to March 11, 1992. On this date, the federal law On Private Detective and Security Activities in the Russian Federation was adopted. Within six months of its passage, 184 security companies had already registered across the country. By the end of 1991, St. Petersburg alone had recorded 20 private security firms. In 2009, the profession of 'security guard' was officially added to Russia's Unified Directory of Professions. Female officers, in particular, are most frequently employed at social and educational institutions.

The same date also celebrates Romeo and Juliet Day, commemorating the fictional betrothal of Shakespeare's famous characters in 1302. Their story, set in Verona, was inspired by a 16th-century Italian novella. Since 1907, the *House of Juliet* in Verona has drawn tourists from around the globe. Meanwhile, World Plumbing Day was established in 2010 to recognise professionals in water supply and sanitation. The occasion highlights the importance of reliable plumbing systems, a concept dating back millennia. Rome's first major aqueduct, the Aqua Appia, was built in 312 BCE to deliver water to the city. In Russia, centralised water supply began in 1804 with the approval of the *Charter of the St. Petersburg Waterworks Company*.

March 11 brings together diverse observances, from the recognition of security professionals in Russia to the cultural legacy of Romeo and Juliet. The date also underscores the critical role of plumbing in modern infrastructure. Each event reflects a unique aspect of history, industry, and tradition.
