Massive landfill fire contained after days of emergency response

A fire broke out at a municipal solid waste landfill on the evening of May 1, 2026. Emergency crews responded quickly, deploying heavy machinery to contain the blaze. Residents in nearby areas have been assured their homes remain safe. The fire was first detected at 9:30 PM on May 1. Firefighters used layer-by-layer soil coverage as the main method to smother the flames, with water only applied to surface fires. Up to 12 units of heavy machinery were brought in to assist the operation.

An operational task force has worked non-stop since the incident began. Due to the nature of landfill fires, extinguishing efforts take several days. By May 4, all visible flames had been put out, and the fire had not spread beyond the site.

Friedrich Metzler, head of Kalachinsk, addressed the situation publicly for the first time on May 4. Authorities will only declare the fire fully extinguished after 48 hours of continuous monitoring. The landfill fire has been contained, with no threat to nearby residential areas. Crews will remain on site to ensure no further flare-ups occur. Official confirmation of full extinguishment is expected within two days of monitoring.
