Meet the Predator: A High-Altitude Drone Redefining Long-Endurance Missions

A new high-altitude drone called the Predator has been unveiled as a versatile platform for long-endurance missions. The developers claim it has no global equivalents, offering capabilities that could replace satellites in certain roles. Designed for commercial, scientific, and defense uses, the drone features advanced technology and a unique 'monowing' structure.

The Predator stands out with its ability to carry a 500-kilogram payload while achieving vertical takeoff, landing, and hover. It operates at altitudes up to 15 kilometres and reaches a top speed of 550 km/h, with a maximum range of 12,000 kilometres. Onboard systems include an AI-powered computer and a 3D spatial scanning system, enhancing its functionality in complex environments.

The drone's 'monowing' design improves speed, lift capacity, and stealth, setting it apart from other high-altitude platforms. For comparison, the US MQ-9 Reaper offers larger ordnance capacity, while Russia's Orion-E provides a lower-cost alternative with 24+ hour endurance and a 7,500-metre ceiling. Meanwhile, DZYNE's ULTRA drone claims over 80 hours of endurance with GPS-hardening for contested areas, and the MQ-9B SkyGuardian has been adopted by multiple nations for long-endurance surveillance.

Production of the Predator is already underway. In November 2024, a manufacturing site in Borovichi (Novgorod Region) was secured, with 230 million rubles allocated to build a high-tech production facility. The project marks a significant step in near-space exploration, combining cutting-edge engineering with broad operational potential.

The Predator's advanced features position it as a flexible tool for defense, research, and commercial sectors. With its high-altitude capabilities and long-range performance, the drone could take on roles traditionally handled by satellites. The establishment of a dedicated production facility signals plans for scaled manufacturing and future deployment.
