Mexico City Launches Groundbreaking Women's Cancer Initiative by 2026
Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo revealed plans for a new cancer initiative in the Gustavo A. Madero borough. The announcement came during a press conference held at the Women's Oncology Hospital on March 9, 2023. The event, part of her regular 'People's Morning Briefing', started later than usual at 8:00 a.m. Central Time.
The mayor's conference took place away from the National Palace, where briefings normally begin at 7:30 a.m. Instead, the location shifted to the Women's Oncology Hospital in Gustavo A. Madero, signalling a focus on healthcare.
By March 2026, Sheinbaum Pardo's administration had rolled out the Mujeres Fuertes contra el Cáncer programme. The initiative includes a new specialised oncology centre for women, set to open in 2027. Mobile screening units for breast and cervical cancer were also introduced, starting operations in the second quarter of 2026.
The programme extends beyond infrastructure. Through partnerships with IMSS-Bienestar, 200 local health workers received training in oncology care. These efforts aim to improve early detection and treatment access in the borough.
The initiative marks a long-term investment in women's health for Gustavo A. Madero. Construction of the oncology centre is underway, with mobile units already active. Training for healthcare staff continues as part of the city's expanded cancer prevention strategy.
