Mexico's debt collectors turn to AI as Gen Z defaults rise with digital lending

Mexico’s debt collection industry is facing new challenges as digital lending grows. Younger borrowers, particularly Generation Z, are proving harder to reach and recover debts from. At the same time, agencies are turning to technology like AI and chatbots to improve how they communicate with those in arrears. Digital lending has made loans more accessible, but it has also raised the risk of defaults. Many borrowers now secure credit without strict checks on their financial history. This shift has forced collection agencies to rethink their approaches.

Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, poses the biggest challenge for debt recovery. Their limited experience with financial products often leads to missed payments. Unlike older generations, they also prefer digital channels like WhatsApp over traditional phone calls. To adapt, the industry is introducing AI tools, voicebots, and chatbots. These technologies aim to make communication with debtors more efficient and less confrontational. The sector already recovers between 40 billion and 96 billion pesos each year for Mexico’s financial system. Strict rules govern how agencies can operate. They may only contact debtors between 8:00 AM and 9:00 PM on weekdays, or until 5:00 PM on Saturdays. Sundays are off-limits, and agencies cannot pursue payments from unrelated third parties or seniors. Violations of these protections can result in legal consequences. The focus is now shifting toward prevention. Agencies are using data to identify struggling borrowers early and offer tailored payment solutions. This move aims to reduce defaults while supporting those facing financial difficulties.

The rise of digital lending has changed how debts are collected in Mexico. Agencies are adopting new technologies and strategies to engage younger borrowers more effectively. With clearer regulations and a push for preventive measures, the industry aims to balance recovery with fair treatment.
