Mexico's electoral chief dismisses Sinaloa 2021 vote fraud claims as baseless

Guadalupe Taddei, president of Mexico’s National Electoral Institute (INE), has rejected claims of irregularities in the 2021 Sinaloa gubernatorial election. Speaking at a press conference, she called the allegations 'incorrect' and stressed that complaints must be filed when incidents occur, not years later. Her remarks come as the INE prepares for the challenges of the 2027 elections. Taddei addressed recent criticism of the 2021 Sinaloa race, won by Rubén Rocha Moya. She argued that delayed accusations hold little weight if no formal reports were made at the time. The INE, she explained, cannot act on claims that surface long after an election concludes.

She also highlighted gaps in the INE’s ability to tackle electoral interference. While the institute is not responsible for tracking organised crime or drug trafficking, it must respond when such activities disrupt elections. Taddei criticised recent federal electoral reforms for failing to provide tools to trace illicit funds in local campaigns. Without these, she warned, proving financial misconduct becomes nearly impossible.

Looking ahead to 2027, Taddei pledged stronger oversight and a push for substantiated whistleblowing. She proposed systems to monitor financial flows and flag suspicious transactions quickly. The INE, she confirmed, will back any official who reports potential misconduct in the run-up to the vote. The INE’s focus remains on tightening election safeguards before 2027. Taddei’s comments underscore the need for timely complaints and better financial tracking. Without these, she warned, addressing electoral wrongdoing will remain a persistent challenge.
