Mexico's Green Party tips 2024 elections with razor-thin vote margins

The Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM) played a decisive role in the 2024 Mexico City elections. Their votes helped the 'Let’s Keep Making History' coalition win key mayoral races and legislative seats. Without their support, several boroughs would have fallen to the opposition.

In Tlalpan, the Green Party added 57,000 votes, narrowly securing victory for the coalition by just 363 votes. A similar pattern emerged in Álvaro Obregón, where their 55,000 ballots created a winning margin of 42,000 votes.

In Iztacalco, the coalition relied on 33,000 Green Party votes to avoid a 4,000-vote shortfall. Magdalena Contreras saw an 18,000-vote contribution from the PVEM, preventing a 14,000-vote deficit for the ruling bloc.

The Greens also made a difference in Milpa Alta, where their 9,000 votes ensured a 3,000-vote lead over the opposition’s 29,000. In Xochimilco, their 32,000 ballots pushed the coalition’s total to 120,000, surpassing the opposition’s 97,000.

Beyond local races, the PVEM’s support helped the coalition win nine federal districts, some previously controlled by opposition parties. Despite these contributions, the Green Party’s Mexico City leadership has criticised Morena’s presidency and the capital’s government for lacking political support. The coalition, made up of Morena and the Labor Party (PT), secured victories in Iztacalco, Magdalena Contreras, Milpa Alta, Álvaro Obregón, Tlalpan, and Xochimilco. The Green Party’s ballots proved essential in these wins. Their role highlights how smaller parties can influence election outcomes in tightly contested races.
