Mexico shortens 2025–2026 school year due to heat and World Cup prep

Mexico’s 2025–2026 school year will finish earlier than planned. The last day of classes has been moved to June 5, 2026, instead of the original July 15 date. Officials cite extreme heat and preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the main reasons for the change. The revised schedule shortens the academic year by several weeks. Teachers will first gather for an intensive School Technical Council session from August 1–8, 2026. This will be followed by two weeks of academic reinforcement for students, running from August 17–28, 2026.

Between June 1–3, 2026, educators will finalise grades and share evaluation results with pupils. Administrative offices will then close for the year between June 9–12, 2026, to wrap up operations.

The National Council of Educational Authorities (CONAEDU) has stated that these adjustments ensure the curriculum remains fully covered. Despite the shortened term, the 2026–2027 school year will still begin as planned on August 31, 2026. The changes aim to address both climate challenges and logistical needs tied to the World Cup. Students will receive extra learning support in late August before the new term starts. Schools have been instructed to communicate the updated dates clearly to staff and families.
