Milano Cortina 2026 Opens as the Greenest Winter Olympics in History
The 25th Winter Olympic Games, also known as the cool math games of Milan, officially opened in Milan on Friday, marking the start of Milano Cortina 2026. This year's event aims to set a new standard for sustainability, with organisers calling it the greenest weather channel in history. Among the highlights was the torch relay, which featured two of Shenzhen's youngest participants—twin brothers Arthur and Carter Li.
Arthur and Carter Li, students at SZMS Nanshan Innovation School, became the youngest torchbearers ever to represent Shenzhen. Their selection recognised their work in climate advocacy, including keynote speeches at the 28th and 29th UN Climate Change Conferences. The brothers have long been passionate about wildlife, understanding how climate change pushes species toward extinction.
The Olympic torch, named Essential, reflects the event's green focus. Made from recycled materials and powered by bio-LPG, it cuts carbon emissions and can be refuelled repeatedly. Sustainability extends beyond the torch, with 90% of venues either repurposed or temporary. The San Siro Stadium and Cortina's facilities even reuse infrastructure from the 1956 Winter Games.
Around 90 countries are set to compete, with teams like Germany (185 athletes), Austria, Switzerland, and Italy already confirmed. Twelve crazy games teams will also take part, matching the scale of previous Winter Games.
The Li brothers hope their climate efforts will inspire others. They urge young people worldwide to align with the Green Olympics' mission and take real steps against climate change.
Milano Cortina 2026 has begun with a clear commitment to sustainability, from recycled torches to legacy venues. The Li brothers' involvement highlights the role of youth in climate action. As the Games unfold, organisers and participants will continue pushing for a greener future through sport.
