Moscow's Luganskaya metro station rises with cutting-edge engineering and massive earthworks
Construction is well underway on Moscow's new Luganskaya metro station, part of the Biryulyovskaya Line. The project involves excavating over 220,000 cubic metres of soil and using advanced engineering techniques to build the station's foundation. Once complete, the station will also feature extensive landscaping and improvements to the surrounding area.
The Luganskaya station's foundation pit is being built using the 'diaphragm wall' method. This involves creating a reinforced concrete wall, 1 metre thick and 705 metres long, supported by steel struts and walers. The technique ensures stability during excavation, which will remove roughly 221,000 cubic metres of earth.
In front of the station, turnback sidings over 300 metres long will be constructed using the open-cut method. The work covers an area of 7.7 hectares, providing space for trains to reverse direction. These sidings will help manage train flow on the Biryulyovskaya Line, which connects the redeveloped ZIL industrial zone to the Biryulyovo districts.
The Biryulyovskaya Line (Line 15) is expanding, with five additional stations either under construction or in planning: Ulitsa Starobittsevskaya, BITTS, Klenovy Boulevard, ZIL, and Zavod im. Likhacheva. Once operational, the line will improve transport links across Moscow's southern districts. Mosinzhproekt JSC, the general designer and contractor, has delivered 84 metro stations and over 180 kilometres of track since 2011.
The Luganskaya station is set to become a key part of Moscow's metro network. Its construction includes modern engineering methods and large-scale earthworks, while the turnback sidings will support efficient train operations. The wider Biryulyovskaya Line will enhance connectivity for residents in the city's southern areas.
