MSI's RTX 5090 Lightning Z Redefines Extreme Gaming with 1,600-Watt Power
MSI has unveiled its latest high-end graphics card, the RTX 5090 Lightning Z, as part of the CES 2026 Innovation Awards. The limited-edition model promises extreme performance, with a power draw of up to 1,600 watts and a built-in 8-inch display. Only 1,300 units will be available worldwide, each individually numbered for collectors and enthusiasts.
The MSI RTX 5090 Lightning Z was developed in partnership with Nvidia. Its design pushes beyond standard RTX 5090 capabilities, thanks to a reengineered thermal system that includes an all-in-one liquid cooler. The cold plate covers the entire GPU, ensuring efficient heat dissipation under heavy loads.
In its default setup, the card supports two power modes: 800 watts via OC Mode and 1,000 watts through Extreme Mode. Both configurations stay within the 1,200-watt limit of its two 16-pin PCIe power connectors (12V-2×6 standard). However, unlocking the full 1,600 watts requires manual PCB adjustments or a custom BIOS.
The Lightning Z also stands out with its premium aesthetics, featuring carbon-fibre accents and a built-in 8-inch display. MSI has teased the product with the slogan The Legend Returns, though the card itself has yet to be officially showcased. Despite this, it has already broken 17 XOC world records at launch, cementing its reputation as a top-tier performer.
Each unit is part of an exclusive run, with only 1,300 available globally. The combination of extreme cooling, customisable power delivery, and record-breaking benchmarks positions it as a flagship product for extreme PC builds.
The RTX 5090 Lightning Z arrives as a limited-edition powerhouse, offering up to 1,600 watts of performance for those willing to modify the hardware. Its liquid-cooled design, built-in display, and world-record benchmarks make it a standout choice for high-end gaming and overclocking. With just 1,300 units in circulation, availability will be tightly controlled.
