Nepal uncovers £15M Everest insurance fraud involving fake illnesses

Nepal has exposed a fraudulent scheme involving Everest climbs, the Daily Mail reports, citing an investigation by the Central Investigation Bureau.

Guides and hotel staff deliberately induced illnesses in tourists to claim insurance payouts.

Fraudsters employed two tactics: either convincing travelers to feign sickness or artificially triggering real health deterioration using pills and other methods. They would then call for helicopter evacuations. Pilots, doctors, and hospital administrators were also complicit in the scheme.

Between 2022 and 2025, authorities identified over 300 suspicious cases, with losses exceeding £15 million.
