Netherlands Launches NATO's First Dedicated Drone and Counter-Drone Forces
The Dutch Armed Forces are set to expand with a major recruitment drive for drone and counter-drone units. Between 1,000 and 1,200 new personnel will join these specialised teams, marking a first for NATO. The hiring campaign begins in April, with the first 600 recruits expected to be brought on board quickly.
The decision follows lessons drawn from recent conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Military leaders stress the need to modernise and adapt systems in response to evolving threats. These new units will operate across all combat branches, ensuring drone capabilities are embedded throughout the armed forces.
The initiative also demands closer collaboration with industry partners. Developing and integrating drone technology requires expertise beyond traditional military structures. While exact deployment numbers for 2024 remain unconfirmed, the strategy positions the Netherlands as the first NATO member to establish dedicated drone-focused forces.
The recruitment push will start next month, with an initial wave of 600 personnel joining soon after. The move reflects a broader shift in defence strategy, prioritising unmanned systems and electronic warfare. The Dutch military aims to finalise the integration of these units in the coming years.
