New Documentary Revives Berlin-Oberschöneweide's Industrial Legacy and Modern Rebirth

A new documentary series exploring East Germany's industrial past has launched, focusing on Berlin-Oberschöneweide. The pilot film, part of the DDR Museum's Orte Ost initiative, premiered on January 13, 2026. Once a powerhouse of electrical engineering in the GDR, the district's story reflects both its historic significance and its transformation after reunification.

The film highlights Oberschöneweide's role as an industrial giant in the early 20th century, often compared to a 'Silicon Valley of the East' for its groundbreaking technologies. After 1990, the collapse of large-scale manufacturing led to high unemployment, but the area gradually reinvented itself. Today, it hosts tech startups, cultural ventures, and renovated industrial spaces rather than heavy industry.

The documentary also traces the district's revival, including the early 2000s arrival of HTW Berlin—a university now occupying the former KWO factory halls. This shift brought new energy to Wilhelminenhofstraße and symbolised the broader changes across the area.

Orte Ost aims to spark local conversations and encourage policymakers to place GDR history within a wider European framework. The series will continue with more episodes, each examining different sites tied to East Germany's past. Viewers can watch the pilot online from January 16 on the DDR Museum's website and from January 19 on its YouTube channel.

The Orte Ost premiere revives memories of Oberschöneweide's industrial heyday while documenting its modern reinvention. The series seeks to connect history with current debates, offering a platform for dialogue about eastern Germany's evolving identity. Further films will expand on this approach, exploring additional locations and their post-reunification journeys.
