Nigeria's bold new system to revolutionize education data nationwide

Nigeria has launched a major initiative to overhaul its education data system. The Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI) will serve as a single, reliable source for all educational information in the country. Officials say it will transform how education is planned, funded, and delivered nationwide. The project was set in motion in January 2025 when a 25-member committee was formed to oversee its development. NEDI is designed to collect, standardise, and analyse education data on a large scale. It will cover everything from school profiles and student records to long-term tracking of learners’ progress.

The system will monitor each student’s journey from early education to the workforce. It will also track investments in schools and measure improvements in teaching and infrastructure. According to Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa, NEDI will play a crucial role in budgeting and planning. He stressed that accurate data is essential for fair resource distribution and effective policy decisions.

NEDI builds on earlier efforts, including the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank, which stores academic research and student work. The minister has called for cooperation between state governments and agencies to ensure the reform succeeds. The goal is to create a strong foundation for Nigeria’s knowledge economy while improving education quality across communities. The new infrastructure will provide real-time data on schools, students, and education spending. This information will help officials make better decisions on funding, teacher training, and school upgrades. If fully implemented, NEDI could reshape how Nigeria manages and improves its education system.
