Nizhny Novgorod's Silver Hacker helps retirees master digital skills

A new digital literacy programme for retirees has launched in Nizhny Novgorod, helping older adults navigate modern technology. The Silver Hacker project, part of the wider University for Seniors initiative, offers small-group classes across 65 city locations. Over 100 seniors have already joined the courses in just three months. The latest intake of the Silver Hacker course began with its first session at the neighbourhood centre on Kirovskaya Street, 5. Classes are kept small, with no more than ten participants, ensuring individual attention for each learner.

The programme covers essential digital skills, from using smartphones with confidence to mastering messengers like MAX. Seniors also learn to pay utility bills online and spot common fraud schemes. Social media basics are another key part of the training. Participants have welcomed the initiative. Marina Chernysheva, one of the attendees, described the courses as vital for staying connected in today's world. Evgenia Kavilashvili, another learner, stressed the importance of keeping up with new technology to avoid falling behind. Oksana Dektereva, Director of the Nizhny Novgorod Public Self-Governance NGO, oversees the University for Seniors project. Under her leadership, the programme has expanded to 65 locations across the city, offering both in-person and online sessions.

The Silver Hacker courses continue to grow, with more retirees signing up each month. The project provides practical skills that help seniors manage daily tasks and communicate securely online. Organisers plan to maintain the small-group format to ensure effective learning for all participants.
