Nurul Izzah Anwar triumphs in PKR's 2023 deputy presidency race

Nurul Izzah Anwar has secured the deputy presidency of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) after a decisive win in the 2023 party elections. The victory came against Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who later stepped down from his role as economy minister following the result. Rumours about her resignation have since been dismissed as false by party officials.

In the 2023 PKR elections, Nurul Izzah won the deputy presidency with 9,803 votes, defeating Rafizi Ramli, who received 3,866 votes. Her term will run from 2025 to 2028. The outcome marked a shift in party leadership, as Rafizi had previously retained his deputy position despite losing the 2023 presidential race to Anwar Ibrahim.

After the defeat, Rafizi resigned from his cabinet post as economy minister, a role he had held since 2023. His departure followed a period where he focused heavily on economic policy rather than party leadership ambitions. Recently, PKR information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil addressed claims about Nurul Izzah's resignation, labelling them as 'fake news'. He confirmed that she remains in her position as deputy president. Nurul Izzah, the daughter of PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, continues to play a key role in the party's leadership.

Nurul Izzah's election win solidifies her position within PKR for the next term. Rafizi's resignation from the cabinet follows his loss, altering the party's political landscape. PKR has moved to clarify her ongoing role, putting an end to speculation about her future in the party.
