OHB Sweden lands major propulsion deal for SWISSto12's HummingSat satellites

OHB Sweden has secured a major contract to supply propulsion systems for six small satellites. The deal is part of SWISSto12’s HummingSat platform, a project aimed at transforming the geostationary satellite market. The company’s financial performance has also seen a significant boost, with revenues and order backlogs reaching record highs.

The contract falls under the European Space Agency’s (ESA) HummingSat Partnership Project. Funding comes from Sweden’s National Space Agency (SNSA) and Germany’s space agency, DLR. OHB Sweden will provide electric propulsion systems designed for precise orbital adjustments and longer mission lifespans.

The first deliveries are scheduled to start in mid-2026. After that, one complete system will be shipped every two months. HummingSat aims to disrupt the geostationary market by delivering performance similar to traditional satellites but at a much lower cost. Meanwhile, OHB’s financial results have shown strong growth. For the first nine months of 2025, total revenue climbed to €863.5 million—a 21% increase. The company’s order backlog also surged past €3 billion for the first time, reaching €3.117 billion, up by 47%. The ESA recently approved a three-year budget of €22.1 billion, marking a 30% rise compared to 2022. Germany remains the largest contributor, committing over €5 billion to the agency’s funding.

OHB Sweden’s propulsion systems will play a key role in the HummingSat platform’s development. With deliveries set to begin in mid-2026, the project moves closer to reshaping geostationary satellite technology. The company’s financial growth and expanding order backlog further highlight its position in the space industry.
