Omsk Oblast shatters 81-year rainfall record in historic April downpour

Omsk Oblast has broken an 81-year-old rainfall record after a heavy downpour in late April 2026. The region experienced its wettest single day in recorded history, surpassing a milestone set during World War II. Meteorologists confirmed the new record as part of an unusually rainy month across the area. On Sunday, April 26, 2026, Omsk saw 19 millimetres of rain in a single day. This beat the previous record of 18.4 millimetres, which had stood since April 26, 1943. The Ob-Irtysh Hydrometeorological Service officially logged the new high.

The final ten days of April brought the heaviest rainfall of the month. Many districts in Omsk Oblast received between 80% and 193% of their typical April precipitation. Some areas saw nearly double the usual amount. Before the record was broken, forecasters had already predicted above-average rainfall for May 2026. The Hydrometeorological Center of Russia had issued warnings about wetter-than-normal conditions for the region.

The new record marks the first time in over eight decades that Omsk’s single-day rainfall peak has been surpassed. With May also expected to bring more rain, residents may face prolonged wet weather. Officials continue to monitor conditions as the season progresses.
