Petropavl's historic park revived by volunteers on Zero Waste Day
Petropavl marked International Zero Waste Day with a large-scale environmental campaign. Volunteers gathered to restore the city's historic park, the only green space where residents can walk among trees. The event aimed to promote eco-friendly habits and encourage greater care for nature among locals. The campaign focused on cleaning up the 100-year-old park, which has lost nearly 2,000 mature trees and much of its underbrush over the past decade. Organisers split participants into teams, turning the effort into a challenge to inspire other districts in Petropavl to take similar action.
Volunteers from the Youth Resource Center, Zhasstar Assembly, and local young people joined the initiative. Their tasks included clearing litter, planting saplings, whitewashing tree trunks, and mowing overgrown lawns. The event was part of the national 'Clean Kazakhstan' program, which has already organised around 300 environmental actions in North Kazakhstan Region since early 2026. Over the coming months, activists plan to expand their work. They will continue improving public spaces, planting new greenery, and maintaining the park's remaining trees.
The campaign highlights how environmental efforts have become a regular part of life across northern Kazakhstan's towns and villages. By restoring the park, volunteers hope to preserve a key green area for the community. Further clean-up events are expected as part of the ongoing 'Clean Kazakhstan' initiative.
