PM Modi shuts down rumors of a new tax on international flights

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dismissed reports of a proposed tax on international travel as entirely false. The claims, published by CNBC-TV18, suggested the government was considering a cess or surcharge on outbound flights to offset rising import costs and oil price swings.

The CNBC-TV18 report indicated that discussions about the travel tax were taking place at senior government levels. It also noted that any revenue collected would bypass state tax-sharing arrangements and go directly to the central government.

Modi responded firmly during a public address, declaring there was 'no question' of introducing such restrictions. He emphasised that the government’s approach remains focused on easing business operations and improving daily life for citizens. Officials later reiterated that current policies prioritise facilitation over new financial burdens.

The Prime Minister’s rejection clarifies the government’s stance on the issue. No further action on the proposed tax is expected, and existing economic policies will continue without additional travel-related charges. The focus remains on maintaining stability in trade and living conditions.
